Head Injuries & IMPACT Testing

Mild Traumatic Brain injuries i.e. Concussion are becoming more and more common among adolescent athletes. These injuries can be difficult to treat and just as difficult to manage properly. The diagnosis and management of concussion is evolving and understanding of this condition has come leaps and bounds in the last ten years alone. Here at JDHS we are committed to offering our student athletes all of the proper resources to protect them from these injuries as well as provide the best management of these injuries when they occur.

As a result we will be requiring all athletes to take baseline neurocognitive testing each year that they participate in sports. This will provide the school, as well as treating physicians and neurologists with a starting point to gauge an athlete’s level of cerebral dysfunction in the event of a concussion. This will also aid professionals in determining when the brain has fully healed. Immediate Post Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing (ImPact) is a computerized test offered free of charge to all JDHS student athletes.

All students must complete the Head Injury Education, and IMPACT Consent and Release Form (found on FamilyID) as part of the Athletic Form Packet prior to their season. If you have not done so please print the enclosed form and submit it to the school nurse. All test results will be confidential and controlled by the JDHS Athletic Department.
